Eye Splice - Tuck

12-Strand Single Braid Eye Splice Tuck

Machovec is proud to bring you these rope splicing instructions. Eye splicing a rope is one of the most asked for procedures. Having a permanently fixed loop (eye splice) on a rope end removes the need to tie and then untie a knot each time you wish to use it. Rope splicing is a very strong method of fixing a loop eye; as the rope is pulled tighter so the spliced strands become more and more squeezed and locked into place. Rope splicing removes the worry of a knot becoming undone and a spliced eye is less bulky. You can buy 3-strand, 8-strand or 12-strand rope with an eye already spliced in or you you can make your own by following these instructions for eye splicing a rope.

STEP 1 - Eye Size

Measure from the end of the rope 7 times the circumference (or 21 times the diameter) in inches and make mark "A". Tape at this mark. Form desired eye size and make mark "B".

STEP 2 - Strand Separation

Tape each of the 12 strands and unlay strands back to mark "A". Try to be careful not to remove twist from individual strands.

STEP 3 - Pair Strands

Rope is comprised of a total of 12 strands, 6 strands with left hand twist and 6 strands with right hand twist.
Select one left twist strand and one right twist strand and tape together. Repeat this procedure so that you have taped 6 separate strand pairs. Select strands that are near one another as they emerge at tape wrap at mark "A".

STEP 4 - Marking Pairs

Lay rope out, forming eye. Do not twist rope. Select three tapered pairs closest to the standing part of the rope and mark on tape :"1", "2", "3" respectively. Mark the other 3 pairs "4", "5", "6".

STEP 5 - Strand Insertion

With fid, open rope at mark "B" and insert strand pairs "1", "2", "3" completely through the rope at right angles to the rope axis. Once strands "1", "2", "3" are through the rope, pull each strand so that taped end "A" is snug against body of rope. It may be easier to pass the strand pairs through the rope one set at a time.

STEP 6 - Initial Strand Tuck

NOTE: Rope braid pattern forms a line of strand crowns running parallel to the axis of rope.
12 strand single braid rope splice tuck
  1. Starting with strand pair "1", select a row of crowns down the axis of the rope and tuck the pair "1" over one strand and under two strands. Once tucked, pull out slack in strand pair "1". Make only one tuck.
  2. Now tuck pair strands "2" and "3" in the same way with each pair, select crown row and tuck the individual pair over one strand and under two strands. Pull out slack in each strand.
  3. With remaining pair strands "4", "5", and "6", select a crown row for each pair and make one tuck. Pull out slack in each pair.
  4. Remove tape wrap at mark "A" and gently but firmly pull on each of the strand pairs so mark "A" is now snug to the base of the eye mark "B".
  5. Now complete two more sets of tucks with each taped strand pair. Be sure to tuck each strand pair down the same crown strand line, try to keep twist in each pair, and continually remove slack from each strand pair after tucking.

STEP 7 - Taper

  1. Cut off strand pairs "1", "3", "5".
  2. Tuck strand pairs "2", "4" "6" for additional 3 tucks. Retain twist and remove excess slack.

STEP 8 - Final Tucks

  1. Split each strand pair "2", "4", "6" into 2 individual strands and tape each strand.
  2. Cut off one strand in each pair leaving a short tail projecting from last tuck.
  3. Tuck the remaining 3 single taped strands for 3 tucks (over one and under two) removing slack and keeping twist.
  4. Now cut off the taped strands, leaving a short tail projecting as shown.

End for End - Lock Stitch

End-For-End Splice
Class 1
12-Strand Ropes

Class 1 12-strand ropes are made from any or all of the following fibers: olefin, polyester, or nylon.

Machovec is proud to bring you information on splicing rope. End-for-end rope splicing may be performed on new or used rope. This is an all-purpose splice technique designed for people who generally splice used rope as frequently as new rope. By following the procedure below, the splice12 strand end for end splice can retain from 90% to 100% of average new rope strength and in used rope up to the same proportion of residual used rope strength.

Step 1...Marking Measurements

Tape ends of line to be spliced. Lay two ropes to be spliced side-by-side and measure one tubular fid length, (two wire fid lengths because wire fids are half size) from taped end of each line and make a mark—Mark 1.Machovec is proud to offer information on splicing rope.
From Mark 1 measure one tubular fid lengths (two wire fid lengths) and make Mark 2 on both lines.
From Mark 2 measure12 strans rope splice measurements - Machovec Marine & Supply two tubular fid lengths (four wire fid lengths)
and make Mark 3 on both lines.

Step 2...Tapering Tail12 strand rope splice tapering tail

From Mark 1, in the direction of the taped end of the line, mark every second right and left strand* for three strands.
Cut every marked strand and pull out of line (tape at end can cause resistance and may have to be removed in order to pull out cut strands).
Tapered end will now have only 6 strands remaining. Tape tapered tail tightly to keep from unbraiding during the rope splicing process.
*Larger rope diameters may have pairs of strands in right and left direction. In this case, treat the pairs of strands as a single strand, marking and cutting both in each direction as described above.

Step 3...Repositioning Ropes

Reposition ropes for splicing according to diagram below.
Machovec is proud to offer instructions on rope splicing.

Step 4...Burying Rope A Into Rope B12 strand rope splice burying rope A into rope B

Attach fid to tapered end of Rope A and insert fid into Rope B at Mark 2 and bring out at Mark 3. Then remove fid.
Pull tapered tail of Rope A until you have buried up to its Mark 2 . With larger lines, once you have fid and tapered tail through the line, tie off tail to stationary object; then use both hands and weight of body to bury Rope B up to Mark 2.
Leave tail sticking out

Step 5...Finish Burying12 strand rope splice finish burying

Attach tapered tail of Rope B to fid. Insert fid into Rope A approximately the diameter of the line away from insertion point of Rope A into Rope B. Bring fid and tail out at Mark 3 of Rope A. Following same procedures as in Step 4 to bury Rope B up to its Mark 2. Leave tail sticking out.

Step 6...Smooth Out Splice12 strand rope splice smooth out splice

Pull tails to tighten crossover. Then, smooth braid in both directions away from the crossover. Now cut off tails—cut tails on an angle so as to give them a point.
Give a final smoothing, away from crossover, stroking rope firmly. Tails should bury inside cover. Rope splicing is a bit of an art, form as well as function.

LOCK STITCHING PROCEDURE

Step 112 strand rope splice lock stitching procedure step one

From mark 2 at crossover, count 8 picks in either direction and insert stitching twine.

Step 212 strand splice lock stitching procedure step two - Machovec

Working towards the crossover, pass end "b" back and forth through splice until a minimum of two (2) complete stitches have been made on each side of crossover.

Step 312 strand rope splice lock stitching procedure step 3 - Machovec

Tie an overhand knot in each tail, as close to its exit point as possible.
12 strand rope splice lock stitching procedure - MachovecInsert tail of stitching twine at exact location where twine emerges. Using needle or small fid, pull (or push) through rope at a slight angle. Pull hard on the end of the twine so that the knot disappears inside the rope. Trim off the remaining twine close to the rope.
We hope this information on splicing rope was helpful.

STEP 1

Mark rope in one full fid length from the bitter end. This is mark "A". Measure one long fid section further. This is mark "B". Form the desired eye size and place mark opposite "B". This is mark "C". Continue down the rope an additional 1-1/2 fid lengths. This is mark "D". (Figure 1)

12-strand rope Splicing

STEP 2

Work from mark "A" toward the bitter end. Mark the sixth pic and continue marking every 5 pics. Cut and remove these strands back to bitter end and re-tape the bitter end.

STEP 3

To mark the tuck points in the area in between points "B" & "C", mark the 3rd, 6th, and 9th pics. Open up "B" with a fid tool and pass the bitter end and tail through the rope completely. Pull the tail through until "A" & "B" align. Make subsequent tucks in the same manner between the 3rd and 4th, 6th and 7th strands. (Figure 2)
Eye Splice or eye splicing a rope.

STEP 4

Pull the tucks tight as you go. After the last tuck above, attach your splicing tool to the tail and insert it between the 9th and 10th strand, exiting the rope at mark "D". Remove the tool and the tape wrap from the tail end. Hold the eye firmly and smooth the rope down the standing part. The tail will withdraw into the rope.

STEP 3

Pull the tucks tight as you go. After the last tuck above attach your splicing tool to the tail and insert it between the 9th and 10th strand exiting the rope at mark "D". Remove the tool and the tape wrap from the tail end.

STEP 4

Work from the bitter end toward mark "A", count three consecutive strand pairs and mark, count another five consecutive strand pairs and mark the fifth pair. Continue counting and marking the fifth consecutive strand pair until a total of five strand pairs have been marked. Cut and remove these strands back to bitter end and re-tape the bitter end. After taper is complete, hold rope at the neck of the splice and smooth cover until taper disappears.
(Note: The rope may be too tight to bury before tapering, if so perform step 4 before steps 2 & 3.)

Eye Splice - Bury

You can buy 3-strand, 8-strand or 12-strand rope with an eye already spliced in or you you can make your own by following these instructions for eye splicing a rope.

STEP 1

From the rope's bitter end, measure back one full fid length. Place a mark on the rope (A). Put a single wrap of tape at the bitter end. (Fig 1) A fid length equals 21 times the diameter of the rope or 7 times the circumference.

STEP 2

Form the desired eye size and mark the point opposite "A". This will be mark "B". (Figure 1)

STEP 3

From mark "B", measure down the rope one full fid plus half fid, this will be mark "C". (Figure 1)

STEP 4

From point "A", counting toward the bitter end, count out 6 pics What's a pic? or pik?. Mark this pair and continue down the rope, marking every fifth pair as shown.

STEP 5

Cut and remove these strands back to the bitter end.

STEP 6

Re-tape the bitter end and attach it to your splicing tool. Insert this tool at "B" and exit at "C". Pull through until "A" and "B" line up. Remove the tool and tape wrap from exposed tail. (Figure 2)

STEP 7

Firmly grasp the rope at the point where "A" and "B" meet. Smooth the rope away from this point, up the standing part of the line. The tapered tail will withdraw into the rope.

STEP 8

We recommend lock stitching and whipping the splice.
